STINTINO

The small fishing village of Stintino (the place name from the Sardinian "s'isthintinu", ie the gut, from the name given to narrow fjord on the rise of the country), has seen its birth in 1885, when the inhabitants were dispossessed from Asinara because of the construction of a hospital and a penal colony.

The 45 families who founded Stintino were mainly of Ligurian origin, some families of origin Ponza and some sardines.
On the birth of the country was essential to the proximity Tonnara Saline and determining the socioeconomic development of the country.
Stintino has become an independent town August 10, 1988 and still retains the characteristics of a fishing village, though the fishing activities has been greatly reduced and the country has become a popular tourist center.

In the extreme north-western tip of Sardinia, is developed around a deep harbor, the harbor for fishing boats, and a narrow fjord in Sassari isthintinu, which gave the village its name and today houses a marina for the many pleasure boats that come to you during the long season.
The surrounding area is characterized by moors and large tracts of Mediterranean, retains great views. At about 15 km from Stintino is the Pond of Pylos, wonderful protected area.

Stintino is developed around two bays with two marinas for fishing boats and pleasure craft. The old port called "Minori" [small] has joined the new port called "Mannu" [major].
The economy revolves around the two small ports and tourism in the summer the town is full of tourists who find Stintino as an happy oasis. Stintino, over the years, has managed to maintain the charm of a fishing village and to combine it with the essential facilities necessary for the high refined flow or tourism.

 

BEACHES IN STINTINO


Stintino' beaches

Stintino peninsula jutting into the sea of Asinara Island, which is separated by a stretch of shallow sea. Besides all'Asinara and Isola Piana there are several other small islands of a few tens of square meters, interesting from the perspective of Nature, the coasts are sandy and rocky beaches on the east side on the west side with a height varying from 10 to 150 m.

To do Stintino one of the favorite destinations on tourism were undoubtedly its beautiful beaches: the Pelosa, the Pelosetta the Saline, Ezzi Mannu, the Pazzona, the beach Tamerici, Coscia and Cala Cala Lupo, Punta Negra. In this stretch of coast the sea alternates wonderful colors dictated by the differences of the seabed, the beaches are white sand beaches unrivaled.

Shortly before arriving in Stintino meets the Pond Casaraccio and the nineteenth century complex Tonnara, now converted into a tourist resort.
The eastern side of the promontory, offers a unique spectacle: the turquoise sea and very transparent of La Pelosa Beach, check with the islet from which the Aragonese Tower, such as finance, built in 1578 to defend the coast.

A little further you see the Isola Piana formerly used for grazing of livestock that was brought with a characteristic transhumance made with fishing boats. On the island stands with its 18 meter high tower built in the sixteenth century the island Piana.
Open on the west coast of Sardinia Sea sees the beautiful cliffs and rocky including several Coscia di Donna, Cala del Vapore.

 

MUSEUMS, EVENTS AND FESTIVALS IN STINTINO

To visit to the Museum of Stintino Trap where it is again the history of Saline Tonnara with numerous videos and photos.

There are numerous religious events including note in May the festival of St. Isidoro in Erculi, where there is a small country church.
September 8 is celebrated in Stintino Madonna della difesa (Our Lady of Defense), the patron saint of the country and is carried out a procession to the sea where the statue of the Virgin is carried on fishing boats by the brotherhood to her, so each year to mark the crossing in 1885 with the Virgin dall'Asinara in Stintino.

The same day is done, reminiscent of the Palio remiero races that old tonnarotti did with the rowboat to get the tuna.
Towards the middle of September is celebrated in Pozzo San Nicola, the patron Saint Nicholas, with traditional and religious events but also the traditional festival of the sheep.
